How To Drain A Pool Without A Pump

Updated November 14, 2020 By Richard Shuback

Once the weather turns cooler it is time to empty the pool. Many people think they need a pump to drain the pool and remove all of the water. That is not the case. There are some ways to drain the pool without using a pump.

Easy Steps On How To Drain A Pool Without A Pump

1.

Siphoning

This is the least expensive method for draining the pool. It can be used on built-in pools and above ground pool. That that is needed is a hosepipe and a place for the water to go. A person needs to be aware of any water that will flood into neighboring yards and the mud it will create. This is one of the easiest methods for removing the water from the pool.

Once a person has the hose they will insert it into the pool. It should be just about touching the bottom. The other end should be placed in the area where the water is going to drain. To begin to get the water out of the pill suck on the end of the hole that is not in the water. Do this until the water is coming out. They need to be careful to stop sucking on the hose right before the water exits or they may end up with a mouthful of pool water. Once the water starts flowing out of the hose it will not stop until the water is the pool is just about empty. Air will then enter the hose signaling that the water is empty. There will only be a small puddle of water left in the pool and it will be just about empty.

2.

Use a Trash Pump

This is not exactly a pump but will work similarly as a pool pump. This pump is used to keep the pool water clean and remove debris from it. These pumps can be rented from the local pool supply store and they are rented out by the day at an affordable rate. The trash pump has a suction and a discharge hose. These items are connected and then connected to the pool. Once everything is connected the water will be drained. The entire pool can be done in 1 to 2 hours which is pretty quick. The process is automated and all a person will need to do is check on the trash pump from time to time. Renting a trash pump is much less expensive than purchasing this pump or even purchasing a pool pump. Once the water is out they can bring it back to the store on the same day that they rented it.

3.

Bucket Method

The buckets and basins have been used for years to remove water from the pool. They will work but are recommended for people with a smaller pool. A place for the water to be drained is also needed. A person will need to get inside the pool and scoop out the water. It is recommended to get some help when doing this as it can be tiring.

4.

Vacuum Pump

The pump used to clean the pool can be used to help remove water from the pool. The vacuum pole will need to be connected to the vacuum head. The discharge hose and the pump will then be turned on so that the water will be removed from the pool. The water will be pumped from the pool using the vacuum. If a person already has this tool they can use it to remove the water from the pool.

Things To Remember About Draining The Pool

Draining the water out of the pool is going to take time. a person should be aware of the area around the pool. If too much water saturates the ground it can push the pool up. Without water in the pool, the pool does not have a lot of weight and can be pushed. The pool should not be drained after a rainstorm as the ground is already saturated with water.

These are some ways to empty a pool without having to go out and purchase a pool pump. These methods are effective at removing the water from the pool so that a person can prepare it for the winter. They are also cost-efficient and will help a person save money when it comes to pool care and maintenance.
